White Cake

This is a rich and wonderful white cake recipe

  1. 4 egg whites
  2. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  3. 1 tsp. baking powder
  4. 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  5. 1/8 tsp. salt
  6. 1/2 cup butter, softened
  7. 1 3/4 cups sugar
  8. 1 tsp. vanilla
  9. 1 1/3 cups buttermilk or sour milk


  1. Allow egg whites to stand at room temperature for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare baking pans as desired and preheat oven to 350 degrees
  3. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  4. In a large mixing bowl beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add Sugar and vanilla; beat until well combined.
  5. Add egg whites one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  6. Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk to butter mixture, beating on low speed after each addition just until combined.
  7. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes for 9" pans, 25-30 minutes for 8" pans, 30-35 minutes for the 13" x 9" pan, or until toothpick tests clean.


  1. For a whiter cake, you can use shortening instead of butter.
  2. I use butter and get a great flavor and still a white color.
